Free. No ads. No paid tier.
Split expenses with your people. Without a paywall in the middle.
Groups, uneven splits, live balances, simplify debts, settle up, multi-currency, receipt photos, and CSV and JSON export. Synced across everyone's devices. No daily limits, because there is nothing to upsell.
Made by one developer, supported by optional donations. An account keeps your groups in sync; your data is exportable any time. Split Sage records who owes what. It never holds, moves, or processes money.
Zero, no asterisk
No ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, no "Pro". A tip jar exists, and it unlocks nothing.
No limits
Unlimited expenses per day, unlimited groups, unlimited members. Every feature is on for everyone.
No lock-in
Export any group to CSV, or your whole account to JSON, whenever you want. It is in the terms.
Everything a shared ledger needs
The features you would expect from a group expense app, with none of them held back.
Groups and invites
One group per flat, trip, or team. Invite by link or code, and everyone sees the same ledger on their own phone.
Split any way
Equally, by exact amounts, by percentage, by shares, or with per-person adjustments. Pick who paid and who took part, per expense.
Live balances
Who owes whom, updated the moment anyone adds an expense. Amounts are always labelled, never only colour-coded.
Simplify debts
One tap collapses the group's web of IOUs into the smallest set of payments that clears everyone.
Settle up
Record a settlement and the balances clear. Split Sage never moves money; you pay each other in whatever app you already use.
Multi-currency
Trips with mixed currencies work like trips. Record each expense in its own currency, and balances stay per currency.
Receipt photos
Attach a photo of the receipt to any expense. Optional, and stored behind a per-account storage quota.
Activity feed and export
Every change is visible to the group. Any member can export a group to CSV, or the whole account to JSON, free.
Your account, your data
An account is what keeps a group in sync between everyone in it. Here is exactly how that works.
Sign in your way
Use a Google account, or an email address and a password you choose. Either way you get one account that keeps your groups in sync across your devices.
Forgot your password? Reset it yourself with a single-use link. That reset link is the only email Split Sage ever sends you.
Private by default
No ads, no trackers, no analytics, no crash-reporting, and your data is never sold. Only the people in a group can see that group.
Your groups sync through the developer's own Cloudflare infrastructure, encrypted in transit and at rest. Export or delete your account whenever you want, in the app or from a public web page that needs no sign-in.
How is this free?
Split Sage is built and run by one developer. There is no company, no investors, and no growth target that eventually needs your ledger to pay rent.
The running costs are genuinely small. Split Sage runs on Cloudflare, whose pricing at this scale is close to zero: the kind of bill a hobby budget absorbs without noticing. If the app grows enough that the bill matters, the optional donation link exists for exactly that. Donations are voluntary, unlock nothing, and everyone gets the same app either way.
What will not happen: no ads, no selling your data, and no moving features you already have behind a paywall. Splitting expenses is a solved problem, and charging monthly for it is a business decision this app simply does not make.
What cannot honestly be promised is that any free service exists forever. So the promise is structural instead: your data exports to CSV or JSON at any time, and if Split Sage ever winds down, the Terms of Service commit to advance notice with export available the whole time. You will never be locked in, and you will never lose your ledger.
Honest answers
The questions worth asking of any small free app.
Do I need an account?
Yes. An account is what keeps your groups in sync between you and the other members, across every device. You can sign in with Google, or with an email address and a password you choose.
Who can see my data?
The people in your groups, and that is the point. Every member of a group sees that group's expenses, amounts, payer names, notes, receipt photos, and settlement history. Outside your groups, nobody. There are no ads, no analytics, and no trackers, and your data is never sold. Split Sage runs on Cloudflare, encrypted in transit and at rest; the full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
Is there a catch?
No ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no premium tier planned. The honest limits, if you want them: it is maintained by one person, and receipt scanning (OCR), bank feeds, and in-app payments are deliberately out of scope. Split Sage records who owes whom; it never touches money.
What happens if you shut down?
Two commitments, both written into the Terms of Service: you can export every group to CSV, and your whole account to JSON, at any time, without asking; and if the service ever winds down you get at least 60 days notice, with export available the whole time. Worst case, you leave with your data.
Does it work offline?
Split Sage is an online, synced app: it needs an account and a connection to keep your groups consistent across devices. Changes you make are queued and sent when you are back online, but this is not a fully offline app, and it is honest about that.
Keep Split Sage running
Split Sage is free and stays free. If it saves your group some arguing, a small donation helps cover server costs and development time. Donations are voluntary and unlock nothing: everyone gets the same app.
